Asian Elders Have Unique LIFE Stressors
Language & Culture: “Elder abuse” not used in Asian languages, ask about “conflict” rather than mistreatment; many do not speak or read English, or may be illiterate in own language.
Immigration: Many fear deportation even if the have citizenship. Many have suffered years of war or other hardships.
Family: Seniors minimize personal problems; do not want to rock boat. Immigration forces reliance on children even if abusive.
Emotional & Cultural Conflicts: Seniors reluctant to report or complain because of they believe they must endure the unendurable; many fear or distrust police based on experience in “old country;” shame embarrassment, and family conflict.
What You Can Do
- Do not use family or friends to translate (they may try to hide abuse). Get appropriate interpreters-right language and dialect.
- Remember contacting police is a big step and senior may be afraid of you.
- Seniors need to feel that someone will listen so take extra time with them.
- Easy targets of abuse are seniors who are disoriented or can’t remember details.
- Remember API elders face stress & culture shock.
- Call API Legal Outreach or community agency with senior’s language.
- Provide police report number for follow-up.
- Call Adult Protective Services or community agency to follow-up.
